Auckland, NZ Sari Multala from Finland had another great day in these brisk southwest conditions, adding a 1-1-1-2 record today to her 3-3-1 scores from yesterday. Her low point score is only nine, putting her 18 points clear of China’s Lijia Xu who is in second with 27 points. My score is 34. Winds today were 10 to 20 knots, shifty and fluky but for the last three races at least, playing the left was the way to go. In the first race I had a decent start and worked the middle left side of the course three quarters of the way up the first beat. Then a right-hand shift favored those out to the right and I never got back into contention. My 14th place became my throwout race. The breeze picked up for the second race and I started well, playing the left-hand side of the course and rounding the top mark behind Sari. We sailed our own race from there, duking it out on the run. I caught her and took over the lead, only to hit the weather mark. By the time I’d spun my penalty circle she was out of reach but I still finished second. I had another good start in the third race and this time I was in fifth place at the weather mark. I overtook one boat on the run and another on the reach to get to the leeward mark in third place. From there, Sari, Lijia, Sarah Blanck from Australia, and I, traded places the rest of the way around the course. I finished second, behind Sari, while Lijia was third.
