Stuck To The Plan On Day 3, Largs PDF  | Print |  E-mail
July 11, 2010
Largs, Scotland

After sitting around for most of the day waiting for the wind to drop, we finally got on the water around 3:45 for a 5pm start of racing. We completed one race, in which I finished with a good 5th place, before the wind died to nothing at the Laser Radial World Championships.

From early this morning, the wind was gusting in the thirty knot range so the race committee decided that we would wait on shore for the wind to ease a little.  After a couple attempts to get us going, the wind finally started to drop around 3:15pm at which point the race committee decided that we would definitely go out and race.  We had been on hour-long postponements all day with the start being pushed back and back.  We finally headed out for a 5pm start in around 12-15kts of breeze.  After the 40 minute sail out, it was obvious that the wind would keep dying during the race so it was important to stay on top of what the breeze was doing.

I had an OK start, but made it my goal to sail smart and sail the shifts and not take big risks like yesterday. The wind continued to be pretty shifty as it died and I made it to the top mark around 15th in a pack of boats.  On the downwind leg, I managed to pass about 7 boats, and then on the second upwind, I passed another two to round the top mark in 6th.  I passed one more boat on the downwind leg to put myself in a comfortable 5th place, which I held to the finish.

It felt good to sail well again, and despite not having the best start, I managed to stick to my game plan which was my goal for today.  I was happy with the 5th place in the tricky conditions, especially considering many other people in the top places had difficult races too.

We start Gold fleet racing tomorrow.  The forecast is for light winds, which we have not really seen too much of here in Largs, so it will be interesting to see what is thrown at us.  You can check the results out on the regatta website.

We would like to thank Carmeuse and Trinity Yachts for their continued support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympics in London.  We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their support.
