Home Club And Surrounding Area Clubs Show Support For Team Tunnicliffe PDF  | Print |  E-mail

August 18, 2010
Detroit, MI

Huge THANK YOU's to North Cape Yacht Club's members and friends for a successful fundraiser held yesterday evening up here in Michigan.  The event was a great success with around 200 people attending to meet the team, contribute, and wish us the best of luck with our campaign.

The evening began with us attending an end of the season awards banquet for local Monroe County Special Olympians.  It was fabulous to meet with them and hear about their success in their chosen sports.  They wowed us with the number of medals they had won (the biggest count was 141), and they were very excited to see the the Olympic Gold medal.  We chatted with them about their sports, took pictures with them, and signed autographs.  We even got some of their autographs for us to take home.

After that, we went back to NCYC for a cocktail hour and dinner.  After dinner, we did a short presentation about our campaign - what we are doing, where we are going, and how.  We answered questions and told stories. It was a fabulous night, and we are very grateful to everyone for their support - NCYC, AYC and I-LYA commodores and their representatives.  Even though we are the ones out on the water sailing, it is everyone behind the scenes that helps us achieve our goals; we couldn't do it without all of you. Thank you.

Specifically, we would like to say a big thank you to Duane and Dar Burgoyne, Leslie Hill, Ken Karnia, and all the other volunteers, especially the youth team, who organized and helped at such a great evening.

We are now in Detroit at Bayview YC for the Toyota International Match Race for the Detroit Cup.  Today was the practice day to re-acquaint ourselves with the boats (Ultimate 20's) and the asymmetrical spinnaker.  We start racing tomorrow morning at 10am.  You will be able to check out the results at the regatta website.

We would like to thank Carmeuse and Trinity Yachts for their continued support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympics in London.  We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their support.

PS: In an attempt to make these updates and this website more user-friendly, if you have any question regarding terminology etc about match racing that cannot be answered in the MR Simply Put section, please email us, via the Contact Page and we will do our best to explain. We really do want you to understand how it works and why we enjoy match racing so much.
