Kiel, Germany, Day 4: Catching Up with Medal Race Tomorrow
June 23, 2009
Kiel, Germany

Finally, today we started racing again at the Kiel Week regatta.  With a much more promising forecast, all fleets hit the water on schedule today to catch up on some badly missed racing.  For the Laser Radial fleet, we were still divided into two fleets, which were actually the same fleets as the first day of racing.  The yellow fleet, the fleet that I was in, had three races to do, but the blue fleet had four races to do.  I finished the day with mostly good results with a  1, 1, 5.

Race one and two were in about 6-8kts of breeze and quite a big chop.  I had a great start in both races and moved to the front quickly.  I had a good battle with Veronika Fenclova from the Czech Republic in the first race, and with Veronica and Charlotte Dobson from Great Britain in the second race.  I was happy to start the day with two first places overall.

Race three started a bit differently for me.  I had a good start again, but read the line slightly wrong and was just down from the favored end.  Although I tacked over in a clear lane and led the leaders to the right and towards the pressure, I got caught in between two pressures and lost boats on both sides.  I rounded the top mark in 6th and stayed around that position most of the race to finish 5th overall.

Tomorrow is scheduled for medal races.  Since we have had only five races (four counting plus one as a drop), and have sailed in split fleets, the points are going to be close overall.  I am currently lying  3rd overall and am 4 points out of first.  Tomorrow will be a close race for everyone involved.

I will report tomorrow how the race went.  You can also check the results here.

I would like to thank my sponsor Carmeuse for their continued support of my campaign for the 2012 Olympics in London and also US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics.

Sail hard,
