A Good Day Earns Fourth Overall

I lifted my game and shared honors for top performance with New Zealand’s Jo Aleh in the two Laser Radial races sailed today at the 2007 Good Luck Beijing International Regatta. I logged 1-3 finishes, while Jo scored 3-1. That moved me up to fourth overall while Jo displaced Belgium’s Evi Van Acker from the leader position.

A breakfast-time cold front brought rain and threatening conditions but the rain had cleared by start time and we enjoyed a 6-8 knot breeze for racing. We needed it to counter the very strong current which gave us an express upwind ride to the weather marks but turned the runs into protracted nail-biting affairs.

Before we went onto the water today I reviewed my first day’s performance and rethought my game plan. I got a good start in the first race of the day and was in striking distance of first as rounded the top mark in third. I caught both the lead boats on the run to begin the second beat in first and maintain my lead to the finish.

These were really tough conditions, with the current opposing the weak breeze. The windward legs were really fast but downwind it was necessary to have a lot of patience and focus on the breeze and not freak out at the presence of all the fleet right there at your back. In the second race I arrived at the top mark in second place after the first beat, then lost one boat on the run. I was still in third place at the finish.

All in all, it was a good day for me as I moved up in the standings. Jo is in first place. Evi finished eighth in both races but is still firmly in second place. Tania Elias-Callas from Mexico is third and I’m two points behind Tania in fourth.
